AI & Copyright – Clare is actively working on AI & copyright issues with a number of publishers, both from a licensing perspective and author guidelines.
She believed it was important to submit her views to the 2025 UK Government Consultation on AI & Copyright. You can read Clare’s submission HERE. She strongly disagreed with the government’s proposal to allow training of AI models without permission and with a proposed (but not yet existing) opt out system. A further report and impact assessment is expected from the UK Government in 2026.
How to manage third-party copyright, clear permissions and use third-party content in line with copyright law – Clare worked on this practical guide for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) together with Professor Emily Hudson (University of Oxford) and Professor Tanya Aplin (King’s College London). Although focussed on Open Access books, it contains practical ideas and checklists for a wide range of permissions: Guidance on managing copyright under UKRI open access policy.
